Indigo Worker Shirt from 1890

A wonderful worker shirt in faded indigo color. The shirt is in great condition, save for a small hole on a sleeve. The shirt shimmers azure blue in the sunlight and has a fantastic, soft feel. Despite its age, it is light and stable and could without doubt be worn today. Notice the simple collar, typical for this period.

History  

Meiji period, around 1900s. Probably Chiba prefecture near Tokyo.

Fabric  

Cotton homespun and hand-loomed. All natural dyeing techniques.

Condition

  • Despite its old age, the fabric is free from any musty scent as it has been professionally cleaned and carefully ironed to preserve the organic dye. Using traditional organic methods, tiny repairs may have been made to strengthen the fabric.
