Stiched and Patched Boro Pillow Cover

120.00

A necessity has become an artwork made of fabric. A witness of times of scarcity. Even though cotton was still precious, the owner allowed herself to sleep on it. This cover could also have been applied on a sitting pillow used in the living room and in front of family shrines. Can you imagine how long you have to use a pillow cover before it develops holes? There are various patches of different fabric on the inside which has created this unintended artwork. We can also see traces of traditional sashiko stitching.

History

Mended and used from around 1890 to 1960. (Meiji, Taisho, Showa).

Cotton homespun and hand-loomed. All natural dyeing techniques.

Measurements

  • 64 x 77 cm
  • 25,1 x 30,3 ft
