As far as the beauty of faded indigo can go, this item is absolutely outstanding. The cloth is around 100 years old. It displays an unusual sign of an ancient family. The towel is large - called a “Furoshiki”. These are a type of Japanese wrapping cloth traditionally used to transport valuable goods such as clothes or gifts.

History

Meiji period, around 1890s. Hokkaido, northern Japan.

Fabric  

Cotton homespun and hand-loomed. All natural dyeing techniques.
