Farm Girl Headwear

195.00

We can only imagine the thoughts, wishes, and desires that were in the head of the Japanese farm girl who wore this more than a hundred years ago. One side displays an elegant sashiko stitching with resist dyeing techniques, the other is Katazome dyed patterns of butterflies. It looks nice from both sides and has a beautiful synthesis of different textile art forms, brought to shape in an unusual piece of clothing.

History

Meiji period, around 1870s. Akita, northern Honshu island.

Fabric

Cotton homespun and hand-loomed. Dark blue and light blue color, all natural dyeing techniques.

Measurements

  • 31 x 152 cm
  • 1 x 5 ft
  • 0,2 kg
  • 0,4 lbs

Condition

  • Excellent condition of large fabric
  • Great condition of fabric, can be used without concerns
  • Vivid blue colors with little stains
  • Despite its old age, the fabric is free from any musty scent as it has been professionally cleaned and carefully ironed to preserve the organic dye. Using traditional organic methods, tiny repairs may have been made to strengthen the fabric.

Note

  • Beautiful butterfly imagery
  • Blend of various textile art techniques
  • Unusual head-wear item
