Ai & Doro Colored Large Light Boro Blanket

515.00

Beautiful large boro fabrics have become rare due to the large demand in recent years, especially in this size - which makes this an exceptional find. Made from various patches, some kept in natural brownish (doro) and others in indigo (ai) color, this piece is remarkable because of its almost flawless condition. The large undyed white parts mixed with others also makes it rare. Most likely, the side without patches was the display side. It says something about the owner that he or she attempted to keep one side of the fabric flawless, with almost modern minimalistic design (one stripe in a different color). With or without intention, this boro is a piece of art.

History

Meiji period, around 1870s.

Fabric

Cotton homespun and hand-loomed. Blue and brown color, all natural dyeing techniques.

Measurements

  • 121 x 162 cm
  • 4 x 5,3 ft
  • 0,4 kg
  • 0,9 lbs

Condition

  • Excellent condition of large fabric
  • Very light and in great condition, can be used without concerns
  • Vivid blue colors mixed with gentle earthy brown
  • Despite its old age, the fabric is free from any musty scent as it has been professionally cleaned and carefully ironed to preserve the organic dye. Using traditional organic methods, tiny repairs may have been made to strengthen the fabric.

Note

  • Highly desirable patchwork boro
  • Flawless condition
  • Mix of blue (ai) and brown (doro) colors
