Red Blanket made from Shop Leftovers

310.00

This bright red blanket, which may have been used as a Kotatsu or bed blanket is truly exceptional. One side is bright red while the other is elegant and dark. The characters written on top of the blanket say “Shelf” and “Virtue”. It also shows a double exclamation mark, a beautiful historical example of the hybridization of the Japanese language that started during the Meiji period (1868-1912). This seems to have been used in a commercial sense. Around Taisho (1912-1926), fabric became cheaper so that industrialists and successful merchants would refrain from using wood and instead have their advertisements written on fabric. But to the average person, cloth remained as precious and expensive as before. Whoever got this into his or her hand was happy and used the bright red side to bolster an elegant blanket.

History

The way the characters are written indicate late Meiji or Taisho, around 1920.

Fabric

Mix fabrics, cotton and hemp. Homespun, hand-loomed and early industrially produced fabric. All natural dyes. Hand-painted characters. Multiple layers.

Measurements

  • 184 x 184 cm
  • 6 x 6 ft
  • 1,5 kg
  • 3,3 lbs

Condition

  • Excellent condition of fabric, little to no stains
  • Very robust material, which can be used without concerns
  • Large yellow-painted characters
  • Vivid blue colors
  • Despite its old age, the fabric is free from any musty scent as it has been professionally cleaned and carefully ironed to preserve the organic dye.

Note

  • Absolutely rare
  • Flawless condition
  • Vivid red and yellow color
